We’re just crazy about this eclectic botanical wine and whiskey party photographed by Meghan Sadler. Everything Yeti & the Beast designed for this soiree circled around the femininity of wine and the masculinity of whiskey. They were inspired by vintage botanical and insect illustrations, along with wooden details that are often associated with the process of making both wine and whiskey.

002

003

Yeti & the Beast also designed all the gorgeous paper goods you see here… We found a library of old botanical images at hi-res and picked our faves to use for our set. We mixed and matched all the envelope liners with insects and florals. We kept the typography on the inside elegant but simple so we could really let the illustrations, die-cut, and custom monogram shine.

The menu we created was based off of recipes we found that all involved using either whiskey or wine. We made caramel chocolate marshmallow whiskey bark, whiskey soaked cola gummies, red wine poached pears, red wine herbed butter, banana cheesecake with a whiskey glaze, and hot toddies. We served traditional sangria and a whiskey punch.

We loved the idea of having a garland down the center of the table but didn’t have a lot to spend, so we looked to our backyard to find a fresh and fragrant honeysuckle vine that would become the bulk of our garland.

The long wooden serving planks are actually tile from The Home Depot. Brilliant! How do you think those cute little teacups? Thrifted.

We made the tables out of some leftover fence wood from our good friends. We wanted this event to be a little more upscale than your average backyard party, but we also wanted it to feel cozy and welcoming so we decided to use blankets and pillows from our home to cover the ground for seating.

How unique and creative a event! How do you think?

Every seasons brings new memories, new friends, new lessons, and new value to life. This Summer has brought many realizations about myself to me and the true importance of taking time to celebrate relationships. Some time I have seen this movement of my life and this blog going simpler and on some level it seems quieter, but more and more beautiful in my eyes. This party was the top of so many things this summer. When I planned it with Mcclure’s back in the Spring I never dreamed what all would have changed as a blogger, creative, and person by the time we sat down for that meal. You can never plan how your perceptions will change in life. I never guessed I would see the value in this simple evening of friends, food, and great drink. It felt like the most magical celebration of everything that is of true value to me. I cannot think of anything better than a meal shared with the dearest people under a starry sky.

002

003

004

Partnering with Mcclure’s fit perfect. They are an amazing company with a recipe that has been passed down for generations. They make one hell of a bloody mary mix and the best part, Joe (co-owner) came and mixed them up special just for us. It was the best way to begin our evening and everyone was in love with the spice and refreshing cocktails. They have tons of amazing combinations. Head on over to their website to get some for yourself or buy it locally from your favorite store. If you cannot find it in your place you can always order it from Zitrades as well.

006

007

The evening was centered around creating a community meal from what was fresh and local as much as possible. Sam Porter of Porterhouse Productions was awesome and made a killer paella. We picked many of the veggies from the garden for the paella such as the green beans, peppers, and fresh tomatoes. Literal garden to table, which is always so yummy!

008

We brought in pails of wine for later in the evening to have with the dinner. We focused on drinking whites to compliment the spicy and seafood based paella. It was the best balance.

009

It was so good to have so many of our talented friends who push us everyday at the party. Many were missing but it was so awesome to have so many of them there. Bryan and Mae above were kind of adorable so I had to share their picture. They also grabbed a picture of me with my favorite photographer who was working so hard all evening to grab all these images and video below all at the same time.

010

This night made me think deeply about the kind of story that we are all writing and telling of life. I thought about what of this evening we would share and what made it so magical. Was it the food? Was it the drink? Was it what we wore? Yes to all on some level but to me it was honestly the people there laughing, telling stories of Summer, feeling the cool breeze come in as the sun set, and the stars that began to appear so brightly in the sky. Those things make moments like this one so much better and more magical than I think we plan as we put together details of an event.

011

012

Did I mention how delicious the food was? Yeah I want to eat it all all over again?

013

We had the tables made by a friend who is opening his store very soon. He was amazing at put these together the day before. I can’t wait to share more of his work with you all as we are beginning partner together on many things in the near future. Him and his soon to be wife are incrediably talented and very close friends so collaborating is only natural, but those tables made the evening so fun and exactly how I envisioned it. It was so great to sit as a group together around a table, on blankets, and without shoes, which brought the most relaxed and homey feeling to the party.

014

015

The evening ended with a toast to friendship and more evenings like this as a community. We listened to remixes of Bon Iver and danced silly till midnight. It is crazy how when you live in the moment things seem less stressful, less planned, and more about just honestly having a great time. It was what I needed in every way. My friends are so good on keeping my mind wrapped around not getting too busy and recentering my perceptions on life. This was probably one of the greatest reminders of what I hope to inspire you all to be doing every day.

016

The candlelight, the blankets, the flowers in milk jugs, the old barn wood table. It all was right. It all was how it should be. Nothing overly planned. Nothing overly done. It was simple, inexpensive, and most importantly based on making the best and happiest memories even in our busy schedules.

017

Once again, thank you to all that made this possible, Mcclure’s, Milled Handmade Goods, and Porterhouse Productions. Also a big thanks to the hubs for making the evening come to life for you all here. Couldn’t have made this possible without all involved.

Should we share a bloody mary mix recipe sometime?

These DIY string light poles are extra sturdy and they look not similar with any string light poles we have seen, with tree trunks taking the place of wooden or metal poles in the concrete bases.

Follow the easy instructions step-by-step to create your own string light poles, and take inspiration from patio decorating ideas.

DIY String Light Poles

I love DIY projects, but I have never used with cement before this Home Depot Cement DIY Challenge. As is the case prior to any challenge, I was slightly intimidated, yet eagerly said, “Bring it on!” Having had no experience with concrete, I finished this project with having learned five things.

  1. Concrete is heavy.
  2. Concrete is easy to work with.
  3. I love my DIY concrete light stands.
  4. I want to create more with concrete.
  5. I can shop at The Home Depot all day.

I live in the Colorado Rocky Mountains, where the landscape is covered in snow 75 percent of the year; the other 25 percent is sunny and wonderful! My family and I try to spend as much time as possible outside during the warm summer months before the chill of winter returns.

My goal was to create an affordable and creative outdoor setting to enjoy alfresco dining for the whole family. I wanted backyard ambiance, too.

002

For my DIY Challenge, I created DIY string light poles to hang a strand of clear globe lights across our outdoor picnic table. For this post, it really was concrete base.

003

We created an organic setting in the newly lit outdoor space to compliment the surroundings. The centerpiece on our picnic table is an herb and vegetable garden, and the place settings are fresh carrots and a radish, which with a DIY custom initial wood slice.

The space also holds sentimental value for me because the trees I set inside the concrete bases were cut down from my Nani and Papa’s house. Now, I have a piece of them in my backyard, which is special for me.

You could make it, too.

Materials Needed

  • 5o lb. Quikrete Fast-Setting Cement
  • Herbs and vegetable plants
  • Wood planter
  • Outdoor Clear Hanging Garden String Lights
  • 2 — 5-gallon buckets
  • WD-40
  • Hooks
  • Aspen tree trunks, or wood

Directions

Step 1

Prep your 5-gallon buckets with WD-40. Spray it generously to cover the entire inside of the buckets.

004

Step 2

Follow directions on the Quickrete bag. We used approximately ¾-gallon of water per bucket, which is more than advised on the bag (½ gallon), but you can adjust as you need.

Pour ¼ or slightly more of the cement into the bucket, then add a small amount of water and mix well.

005

006

Step 3

Repeat until you have used the entire bag of cement, and make sure it is mixed well. That is quick-setting cement, so work in a swift manner. Once the cement is mixed well, insert the tree trunk fully into the center of the cement mixture.

007

008

Step 4

Make sure the trunk is straight and hold it in place for about 15-20 minutes, until it no longer moves. The concrete will not be dry in 15 minutes, but it will be hold it in place.

009

Step 5

Repeat this same step with the other bucket. The cement is fast-setting, and our trees were set after about 45 minutes to one hour; even though I suggest waiting at least 12 hours before removing from the buckets, which to ensure the trunks stay in place.

Step 6

After 12 hours, you can do on of two things.

  1. Lightly hammer the sides of the bucket to loosen the edges of the concrete from the bucket and remove from the bucket.
  2. Cut the buckets from the top to bottom for a clean break by utility knife.

We chose option #2 just because it was heavy, which is easier for us to remove.

Step 7

Place the concrete stands where you want them to be.

010

Step 8

Drill a small, shallow hole into the top of each trunk, and screw in small hooks.

011

Step 9

Hang the string lights from hook to hook.

012

Step 10

Plant the herbs and vegetable plants in the wood planter box with a little garden soil. Recruit the kids to help.

We planted sage, oregano, lavender, a sweet red pepper plant, mint and garlic chives and so on.

013

Step 11

Set the table, using the planter box as a centerpiece, and fresh vegetables and wooden accessories as place settings.

014

015

Step 12

Prepare the food, enjoy it.

Move over fairy lights. It’s all about hanging up a string of old-school clear globe lights, if you’re decorating your table for an evening party. It’s a simple idea to add an easy yet visually effective touch to your dinner table.

I’ve found where to find the best globe string lights (also known as “festoon lighting” in Australia), and rounded up the most inspirational tables to show you how to dine under your very own starry night – outdoors or in.
